About the race

The 5th/6th July Toronto Harbour International Challenge is a gruelling 23.5 kilometre race around Toronto Island. Paddlers have to be capable of handling rough water conditions and large wakes.

Already the largest outrigger canoe race in eastern Canada, in 2007 the Toronto Harbour International Challenge had over 130 competitors. Over the past three years, the field has included current and former Canadian National paddling team members, crews from all the outrigger clubs in the Greater Toronto area, as well as several crews from the east coast of the United States.

Racing gives everyone the opportunity to experience competition in a supportive environment. At 12 miles in length a race is long enough to challenge the toughest crew and technical enough to challenge the wisest of steersman. A chain of 15 tiny islands that provide a natural harbor for the thriving city of Toronto, the Toronto Islands are a favorite destination for locals and guests looking for a respite from city life. liberty

Toronto Harbour Rules

  1. Approved PFD and personal signalling device(whistle) for each paddler.
  2. Each vessel must carry a 50 ft safety rope and bailer(s).
  3. Each vessel must carry a portable signaling device i.e. air horn.
  4. Vessels must honour Harbour Rules to give way to motor traffic in the harbour, in particular ferry boats.
  5. Pay particular attention to the Airport Ferry at the Western Gap. Vessels must give way to the ferry boat.
  6. Buoy turns and race courtesy - Exercise caution regarding boat contact - SAFETY FIRST

According to the Toronto Police Marine Unit there is no restriction on paddling to or around the islands, or through the harbor. However, this is a shipping lane, so make sure you're not cutting in front of any large or fast-moving vessel. And hug one side or the other (the Island side is better) as you go through the channel. The gap itself is only a few hundred yards across, but it's made slightly more daunting by the fact that the islands at this point are blocked off by a vertical concrete retaining wall about 10 feet high. In order to actually land safely on the islands, you either have to go north through the channel, into Toronto Harbour and around a reasonably short breakwater, landing at Wards Island; or you have to go south toward the open water of Lake Ontario, around another small breakwater, and then land at a beach
